Lizzie Smith Hypnotherapy - sugar addiction

Can hypnotherapy help with sugar addiction? The short answer to this question is yes! Let me explain more…

The brain associates the dopamine high that we get from sugar with survival, which is why we prioritise sugary foods and alcohol in the way that we do.

If you consume a lot of sugar and then try and stop without support, you will get very strong cravings and other unpleasant feelings of withdrawal, otherwise known as sugar addiction.

Desire for sugar is a learned behaviour and something that we learn to feel and then repeat until it becomes automatic and habitual.

When we consciously try to stop eating foods that are laden with sugar, or cut down on drinking alcohol, it is actually very hard to maintain because our subconscious mind is not on board at all. We have unconsciously trained that part of the brain to desire those foods or that alcohol and the cravings become very intense because of repetition, conditioning and reward. Willpower and denial will only intensify the desire more.

The good news is that the subconscious part of our mind has the ability to be reprogrammed – which is where hypnotherapy comes in.

How can hypnotherapy help sugar addiction?

Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis and works directly with the subconscious mind, which will only accept beneficial suggestions because we by-pass the conscious thought process.

It then becomes possible to release those negative habits and learned behaviours of sugar addiction, that have been programmed into the subconscious and replace them with a preferred response.

I work with many clients who want to have a measured and mindful approach to their eating and drinking and who are delighted and often astounded by how quickly and easily they are able to release limiting beliefs, gain back control and good health. I offer a 4-week Mindful Eating Programme and a 4-week Mindful Drinking Programme – which include audios and all sessions are tailored to the individual. Maintenance sessions can be added on to suit and most clients do continue with sessions as they find them so beneficial and relaxing. It is an opportunity to look at the triggers and emotions behind our behaviours, so that you will understand yourself on a deeper level.

Hypnotherapy also creates an opportunity to give our brains some time-out and to re-group and re-set. It is a nurturing and restorative way to spend an hour…think of it as a mini-break for the brain!
