E-cigarettes - the facts

E-cigarettes and vaping has become a popular alternative to smoking cigarettes, due to claims that is it safer. Scientists have found that vaping contains aerosols with thousands of unknown chemicals that may have significant health risks that we are not aware of yet.

E-cigarettes use a battery to heat up a liquid into an aerosol that users inhale. It's not just harmless water vapor. The liquid that fills the cartridges usually contains nicotine (which is extracted from tobacco), propylene glycol, flavourings and other chemicals. Studies have found that even e-cigarettes claiming to be nicotine-free contain trace amounts of nicotine. Additionally, when the liquid heats up, more toxic chemicals are formed.

What researchers do know is that these toxic chemicals and metals have all been found in e-cigarettes. Compounds linked to respiratory problems, pesticides, industrials chemicals and caffeine are also present. Chemicals known to cause cancer have also been found.
