Picking Yourself Up After Divorce

Divorce and breaking-up with a partner is accompanied by a huge sense of loss. Our identity as part of a couple changes. You have moulded your life around another person and perhaps made comprises and plans for the future and having to let go and “move on” is not that simple. You may have initiated the break, but you still leave a piece of yourself behind you and there is a journey ahead to navigate – a path of self-discovery where you will find a new you.
The hopes and expectations you once had as part of a relationship can be very high, so when things don’t work out there is a huge disappointment and a feeling of being let down and sometimes letting others down.
It is a significant loss and it takes time to come to terms with. Listening to a friend or relative going through this and living “in pain” is very challenging. Sometimes the best advice you can give to that person is to seek professional help and talk to someone trained who can help them to understand the intensity of the emotions they may be experiencing.
Divorce can bring anger, bitterness, jealousy, grief, despair, regret and shame. All of these emotions are very destabilizing and affect our sense of security, making us feel vulnerable and lost.
Staying in touch with friends and those who care for you will give you a good sense of support, but sometimes sharing your pain with those you love is not always helpful. It can be hard and wearing for that person and ultimately affect your friendship. Also, the well-meaning advice from friends is not always the best way forward. Sometimes we need to have the freedom of speaking with someone who doesn’t have an agenda and who can, when necessary, challenge us and our behaviour.
A break-up involves two people. We can never place the blame solely at someone else’s door, so therapy does involve looking at your own role in the relationship and being prepared to take some responsibility.
