How I cured a debilitating fear in one session

The mind is an extraordinary thing and sometimes a debilitating fear can create an unwelcome physical reaction like vomiting, fainting or panic. It is always good, in the first instance, to be checked out by a GP, however a medical reason cannot always be found.
I have been working with a 19 year old recently who originally came to see me with a chronic and debilitating fear of needles, hospitals and the thought of medical procedures. It was so bad to start with that the sight of a nurse in uniform made her feel faint and brought on a panic attack. We have used a combination of therapies – hypnosis, BWRT® and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and she has made significant progress.
She is due to start University this September and her anxiety levels had begun to increase over the summer. The knock on effect of this manifested in her vomiting after every meal. She didn’t feel unwell and there was nothing physically wrong to have caused this.
How one hypnotherapy session helped her debilitating fear
We had an online session and she talked about the fact that the vomiting started on a bad day for her and that it had become a bit of a cycle – it was happening 3 times a day.
To start with I used the EFT technique – tapping on acupressure points around the head whilst focussing on her negative emotions. EFT is often described as emotional acupuncture as the tapping gently shifts the block and releases. Relief is immediate. She had also been feeling very vulnerable and nervous about starting University and she wondered if the vomiting was in reaction to her anxiety. During the tapping we used her words about all her fears and what was happening…and then moved into the positives.
I then hypnotised her and reinforced everything we had done during the session, suggesting to her that she would no longer vomit when she had eaten – because she was trusting in herself to manage her fears now and was feeling empowered and safe.
The outcome is a good one! That one session has completely stopped the vomiting and she is feeling so much better and relieved as a result. She has continued with the tapping and this enables her to keep her worries in check.
EFT is an empowering self-help technique that clients can take away and use on themselves for all manner of debilitating everyday issues. It is then possible to implement positive goals and focus on optimising emotional health.
